Nick Cave ha scritto un commovente messaggio ad una fan la cui madre è stata assassinata, raccontandole la sua esperienza di “pure and holy anger” frutto del dolore. La risposta di Cave è arrivata tramite il suo sito The Red Hand Files, sui cui Hannah ha chiesto consigli all’artista australiano su come affrontare il dolore, spiegano che sua madre era stata uccisa da un suprematista bianco in un attacco contro una sinagoga.
Il tema del lutto è già stata affrontato da Cave più volte, e in maniera più toccante quando ha parlato del dolore provato a causa della scomparsa prematura del figlio Arthur all’età di soli 15 anni, avvenuta ormai 4 anni fa. Tuttavia ha comunque risposto ad Hannah dicendole che la sua rabbia è un modo di proteggere e ricordare la madre:
It feels to me that the meaning exists within the anger. Not only is your anger justified, it is compassionate and essential and, as you said, connects you to your mother, even as those around you take possession of her, eclipsing your feelings with their own needs. The righteous energy of your anger is the flaming sword you hold above your mother’s memory. It may be the very thing that protects her, shielding her from the suffocating demands of the world. Perhaps, at this time, your anger is a way of safekeeping the spirit of your mother, of caring for her, of seeking her, of calling her to you. It is a pure and holy anger.
Cave ha poi concluso il suo messaggio augurando ad Hannah di trovare prima o poi pace, e in qualche modo, messa da parte la rabbia, di riuscire a rimettersi in contatto con la madre:
But there is another place too, a quieter place that patiently awaits you, and maybe in time you will find a moment to temporarily lay down the sword and, speaking into the sacred silence, talk to your mother, in grief, in longing, and in her presence, and perhaps find some solace there. I very much hope so.
