Dopo l’edizione itinerante dell’anno passato, la scorsa notte sono stati assegnati gli MTV VMA 2021, tornati al Barclays Center di New York con la conduzione di Doja Cat.

Uno show spettacolare segnato dall’opening speech di Madonna dedicato ai quarant’anni di MTV e dalla quasi-rissa tra Machine Gun Kelly e Conor McGregor, ma soprattutto contraddistinto dal trionfo della giovanissima Olivia Rodrigo che dopo averci fatto innamorare col suo album d’esordio SOUR ha sbaragliato la concorrenza portandosi a casa 3 premi, confermando di essere uno dei nomi del futuro del pop. Insieme a lei sono stati premiati (e non poteva essere altrimenti) i BTS, Justin Bieber, Travis Scott e la madrina della serata Doja Cat, che – tra una cosa e l’altra – si è portata a casa i premi come migliore collaborazione dell’anno con SZA e best art direction per Best Friend.

L’altro nome di punta di questa edizione è quello di Lil Nas X, che ha spaccato tutto con una mega esibizione e che ha vinto il premio del video dell’anno col brano MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) per il quale c’erano in lizza anche Cardi B, The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran e DJ Khaled con Drake.

Oltre ai premi, come da copione, ci sono state le esibizioni, tante e spettacolari: i vincitori Doja Cat, Lil Nas X; Normani con Teyana Taylor, Kacey Musgraves e chiaramente quella della pluricitata Olivia Rodrigo.
