Derek “MixedbyAli” Ali, ospite del podcast The ETCs di Kevin Durant, ha rilasciato una interessante intervista in cui ha parlato della sua carriera, del lavoro con la Top Dawg Entertainment, ma, soprattutto, di Kendrick Lamar.
Ali, che ormai collabora da tempo come ingegnere del suono con il rapper di Compton, nel corso dell’intervista ha rivelato che Lamar ha una materiale inedito a sufficienza per realizzare sei nuovi album:
For Kendrick alone, let me say, I think we could put together like six albums. And, you know, we got everyone’s the same way. It’s all about just understanding that you could do something better. It’s having that mindset to strive for the best possible version of you possible.
That’s Kendrick’s whole mindset is just always striving to do better whether it’s recording a new verse. You know, he would record a whole song and get one ad-lib back a month later, because he don’t like how he breathed on the ad-lib. It’s being that detailed with is what separates the kids from the men, the good from great, to just being that particular with every corner of a song and really getting into a crevice and understanding every piece of it. He’s a true artist.
Il 28 ottobre Kendrick Lamar è tornato, insieme a Busta Rhymes, con il brano Look Over You Shoulder. Il featuring con il rapper di New York è stato ben accolto, tuttavia la vera attesa è per il quinto album in studio di K-Dot, che secondo delle indiscrezioni dovrebbe avere delle influenze più rock. Lo scorso 18 maggio Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, CEO dell’etichetta indipendente TDE, in un commento apparso su Instagram scrisse: “Stay patient king Kendrick will return soon”.
Quella di Tiffith è solo l’ultima indiscrezione su un eventuale nuovo album di Lamar: nel dicembre 2019 HasItLeaked.com, sito specializzato sulle nuove uscite, pronosticò l’uscita del nuovo album di Lamarper il 2020; il mese seguente Bill Werd, il direttore editoriale di Billboard, postò su Twitter che il quinto album di K Dot era pronto. Lamar, in una recente intervista rilasciata a i-D, ha spiegato il perché di tutto questo tempo tra un album e l’altro:
I spend the whole year just thinking about how I’m gonna execute a new sound, I can’t do the same thing over and over. I need something to get me excited. I see you get frustrated sometimes because you want some new shit.
