Le 165 canzoni bannate dalle radio americane dopo gli attentati dell’11 settembre

Nelle ultime ore si sono tenute negli USA le commemorazioni per il ventennale dei tragici attentati dell’11 settembre 2001 al World Trade Center e al Pentagono: un evento di portata epocale in cui morirono quasi 3.000 persone e le cui conseguenze sono ancora ben tangibili, come ci hanno mostrato le vicende degli ultimi mesi in Afghanistan.

La storia di quegli attacchi, anche grazie a film, documentari, testimonianze, è ben nota anche a chi quel giorno di fine estate 2001 era solamente un bambino. Altrettanto conosciute sono le durissime reazioni della politica americana fin dai giorni immediatamente successivi l’11 settembre. Ciò che, forse, non sapevamo (o semplicemente, non ricordavamo) è che queste reazioni coinvolsero anche il mondo della musica.

Clear Channel Communications (oggi nota come iHeartMedia), società che possiede più di 850 stazioni radio negli USA, decise infatti di bannare dalla rotazione radiofonica quasi 200 brani che potessero richiamare agli attentati, con quello che fu uno dei più importanti movimenti di censura della storia contemporanea.

L’azienda inviò la lista di canzoni bandite a oltre 1.100 stazioni tre giorni dopo gli attacchi: molti brani furono etichettati come “liricamente discutibili“, come ad esempio Learn to Fly dei Foo Fighters, Rocket Man di Elton John, Fly Away di Lenny Kravitz o In the Air Tonight di Phil Collins. Insomma, qualsiasi titolo che potesse essere ricollegato in qualunque modo a quell’evento fu cancellato.

Altre canzoni, però, non furono più mandate in onda esclusivamente per motivi politici: è il caso dell’intera discografia dei Rage Against the Machine, band da sempre molto critica nei confronti degli USA, o di Imagine di John Lennon, in quanto l’immagine di un mondo pacifico dipinta nel testo del brano era “in contrasto con la richiesta di risposta violenta da parte dell’opinione pubblica”.

La lista – che trovate di seguito – è lunghissima e a vent’anni di distanza fotografa alla perfezione lo stato d’animo in cui si trovarono gli USA le settimane successive alla caduta delle Torri Gemelle tra il desiderio di vendetta e la paura del diverso: paura che portò Clear Channel Communications a bannare anche brani totalmente inoffensivi come Walk Like an Egyptian delle Bangles, la cui unica colpa era il riferimento nel titolo a un popolo musulmano.
