Riportiamo le recenti parole di Ezra Koenig, leader dei Vampire Weekend, incalzato nuovamente in relazione al nuovo album della band di New York.
Secondo quanto riportato da Entertainment Week (qui puoi leggere l’intervista completa) la recente collaborazione come songwriter per Beyoncé e, specialmente, per Kanye West avrebbe avuto un impatto decisivo anche per quanto riguarda l’elaborazione del nuovo progetto. Da un certo punto di vista, spiega, scrivere per un altro sarebbe una cura contro il narcisismo e contro l’idea che tutto ruoti intorno a te ed al tuo modo di presentarti al mondo.
[..At this point in my life, I’ve started to have this admiration for songwriters. I’d never been interested in writing for other people, but when you hear somebody else sing a demo that you made, it’s surreal. It makes you think of yourself more as a songwriter, because you’re not the singer anymore. If you’re in a situation where Kanye hands you something and asks you to go come up with an idea and make a demo, suddenly you step out of yourself. You look at the craft of songwriting in a different way, without the narcissism of it being all about you and your presentation to the world]
In particolare dopo questa esperienza con Kanye West, si è sentito molto più arricchito rispetto alle tecniche di produzione pop, rispetto al metodo pop (pop-method, ndr.) e l’approccio al nuovo album è stato un po’ come dire… wow ora chiamo a collaborare altre 200 persone! Livelli di ambizione altissimi che lo hanno spinto a cimentarsi nella progettazione di un album non esclusivamente commerciale, ma orientato alla divulgazione di massa.

Per quanto riguarda, nello specifico, la direzione musicale che potrebbe prendere il nuovo album sono due le variabili da tenere a mente: da un lato sicuramente questa esperienza con Kanye West (forse più sul metodo che sulla musicalità) e per altro verso la musica folk (a tratti country).
Tra le pieghe dell’intervista, infatti, non si parla solo di Kanye ma anche degli influssi trasmessigli da Kacey Musgraves vista nel 2016.
I’ve always really had a thing for really simple forms of folk music, whether it’s like Irish ballads or old-school country. I just like simple songs. I went with Ariel to see Kacey Musgraves at the Greek Theater in L.A. [in September 2016]. The thing I loved about it was it wasn’t too loud — I’m definitely becoming a cranky old man — so I could really hear every word. There’s a lot of Vampire Weekend songs that have elegance in terms of baroque chords, arrangement, and interesting turns of phrase — but we’ve never had a song as elegant as some of that good country-folk songwriting. One of the things that I’ve always been hard on myself about is not having enough songs that you could play for somebody and they’d immediately know what the song is about. It’s like the elevator-pitch version of the song. I felt like that was an interesting challenge. I cannot say every song rose to that challenge.
L’ennesima e corposa dose di spot per il nuovo progetto è stata lanciata e dando un rapido sguardo alle premesse, il nuovo lavoro dei Vampire Weekend farà certamente discutere! Non ci resta che aspettare.
