Ci risiamo, Matt Beninger continua a dare anticipazioni sul nuovo album dei National, il naturale seguito dell’acclamatissimo Trouble Will Find Me, ormai risalente al 2013.
In un’intervista per Rolling Stone, il frontman ha dichiarato che la band è immersa nel processo creativo che, a quanto pare, non porterà frutti a breve. Berninger ha aggiunto che il clima generale dell’album è molto dark, proprio l’habitat naturale per un songwriter come lui, scherzando anche sulla malinconica reputazione che la band ha saputo costruirsi negli anni:
I’m going very dark with the new National record, which is a place I love to go, people have always described our music as dark and say it goes very melancholy, somber places. They haven’t heard anything yet! This next thing is crazy.
Il frontman ha rivelato che il tema centrale dell’album sarà un matrimonio fallito, fortunatamente non il suo! Anche in questo album si sta avvalendo della collaborazione della moglie Carin Besser nella scrittura delle lyrics, affrontando a cuore aperto le loro personali battaglie quotidiane. Riguardo i risultati Berninger è molto criptico:
It’s about marriage, and it’s about marriages falling apart, I’m happily married, but it’s hard. Marriage is hard and my wife and I are writing the lyrics together about our own struggles and it’s difficult to write, but it’s saving my marriage. Not saving my marriage, my marriage is healthy, but it’s good for everything! And so it’s gonna be a strange record, and I’m crazy about it.
Ultimamente il leader dei National non ha nascosto nemmeno il suo grande entusiasmo riguardo alla candidata presidentessa Hillary Clinton, come non ha nascosto il suo disgusto nei confronti del rivale Donald Trump, dedicandogli una canzone con il suo side-project ELVY:
She has many flaws. I’ve got so many flaws and I’m in love with myself. But I give myself a break. So I think she’s wonderful, especially the way she’s been handling what she’s been facing recently and with direct power, elegance.
